Philmont Scout Ranch
From August 5 to August 13 2023 the Venture Patrol traveled to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. Instead of backpacking across the 140,000 acres ranch for a week, the Venture Patrol were one of only two crews that got the opportunity to do an eight day cavalcade where they road horses every day throughout the trip. While on trek scouts had the unique opportunity to gold pan, shoot black-powder muskets, spar pole climb, summit Mount Baldy (a 12,5oo ft mountain on the ranch) and participate in barrel racing at a gymkhana (horse riding competition between two different cavalcades) and so much more. Scouts also learned how to fully take care of a horse. Each day the Venture Patrol were responsible for feeding and saddling their horses for the day’s ride which also included loading and unloading pack horses. On the way back to the airport the group stopped at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs for a self guided tour. If you would like to see more photos from this trip click here.
